A year of events in Winchester: when to visit
Winchester has something going on in every season. Here are some of the regular events that make it worth planning a stay. Dates change each year, so always confirm with the organisers.
April: Winchester Books Festival. A weekend celebrating books, authors and the joy of reading, held each spring.
May: MADE Craft and Design Festival at Winchester Cathedral. It ran from 7 to 9 May in 2026 and showcases makers and designers.
July: Hat Fair. The UK's longest-running festival of outdoor arts normally takes place on the first weekend of July. It was paused for 2026 and is expected back in 2027.
September: Winchester Heritage Open Days. Ten days of free walks, talks and access to hidden historic buildings. The 2026 festival ran from 11 to 20 September.
November and December: the Cathedral Christmas Market, which brings thousands of visitors every year.
Staying for a long weekend or a full week? A whole house gives everyone room to relax between events, and it works out well for groups travelling together.
